As a cat parent, you may have heard of catnip before – but what is it? Is it safe? Will my cat like it? And if so, where can I get it?
What is catnip and is it safe?
Catnip is a plant that is part of the mint family and has over 200 varieties. Common Catnip (Nepeta catario) and Catmint (Nepeta mussinii) are the most common and readily available, with Common Catnip being the most popular with our furry friends. Both these varieties of catnip are safe to use on your cat.
What is it used for and why does my cat like it?
Cats inhale the aromatic oils of catnip, where they encounter special receptors in the cat’s nose. These receptors are linked to the brain and affect your cat’s behaviour.
Signs can vary between cats (with up to 30% not affected at all), but frequently, catnip induces a state of euphoria or calm.
